Last year, 5 middle school students took part in BOCES APP Challenge with Ms. Burghardt. Priya Riegle, Benjamin Appleman, Andrew Appleman, Alex Kudgus and Calvin Kratky were tasked with developing an APP that educated others about cultures.
The students used their coding skills to develop a soft version of an app that took you to different cultures and educated you about the different festivals that that culture celebrated. They also coded a game that you could play based on the festival. They named their app "Culture Connective."
This group also had to create a slideshow and commercial explaining their app development and the purpose and reason for developing their app. They presented to a group of BOCES judges and were chosen as winners in March 2023.
With this winning title through the country, Priya, Ben, Andrew and Alex chose to take their APP to the National Congressional APP Challenge through Washington, D.C. Over the summer and fall months, Mr. Seth Appleman and Ms. Burghardt continued to work with the students to enhance and develop their app through coding. The students then made took their app in a new direction, rebranded, and created an amazing app presentation to compete with middle schoolers from all over the country.
While our Maine-Endwell Students did not gain national recognition, we are very proud of their hard work and dedication to developing their coding skills which will benefit them far beyond their middle school years.
This year, Ms. Burghardt will be submitting six teams for the 2024 APP Challenge, including the 2023 APP Challenge winners mentored by Mr. Appleman. We cannot wait to see what APPS they develop this year!
